May 8, 2008 TO: Fourth Ward Residents Haverford Police Department School District of Haverford Township Haverford Township Bureau of Fire
As I am sure you are aware, the Haverford Reserve development, including the township's proposed park facilities, anticipates traffic impacts on the surrounding roads that require improvements to several intersections. Turning lanes are being built at Darby Creek and Lawrence Roads, at Marple and Darby Creek Roads and at Darby Road and College Avenue. A traffic signal and turn lane is being constructed for Darby Road and Williams Lane, opposite of the main entrance to the site. The most significant impact will be work at Darby and Marple Roads, where the intersection is being completely reconstructed to improve sight distance and a traffic signal is being added. There are other improvements that will take place during the construction period including replacement of the gas main from Sproul Road to the Haverford Reserve entrance, installation of storm water lines and inlets to address proper drainage on the road, and utility relocations. To accommodate this construction, road detours and lane closures are required. A proposed detour plan to facilitate work on Darby Road was recently approved by PennDOT. The work is tentatively scheduled as follows: § Starting the week of May 12th, the contractor will be working at Darby Creek Road and Marple Roads. This work will require lane closures and is expected to last approximately 2 to 2 ½ weeks. § Work at Darby Creek and Lawrence Roads will begin the week of May 26th and will take approximately 1-½ weeks. The work area will require lane closures. The remaining work at Darby Road and Williams Lane, Darby and College Avenue and at the intersection of Darby and Marple Roads will occur simultaneously and will be coordinated with the replacement of the gas main. Darby Road will be closed and detoured between Sproul Road and Ardmore Avenue, from dawn to dusk. This is being done to avoid potential confusion associated with numerous “short segment” detours and to meet the ambitious schedule of completing all work by September of this year. It will also be necessary for a 24-hour closure to transition from the old to new configuration at Darby and Marple Roads. We anticipate that this detour will commence the week of May 19 and will conclude in early September. At all times, residents, emergency vehicles, trash pickup, mail and other basic services will be able to access the road. However, please be aware that access points will change over time as the work progresses. We will issue further updates as the schedule changes in an effort to keep residents apprised of the project. Thank you for your patience during the construction of these roadway improvements. Lori Hanlon-Widdop, Director, Community Development/Codes Enforcement Haverford Township 610.446.1000, ext. 250 |
